Activities

There are seven mountain bikes available and cycling maps of the area on which the many routes are shown.  You can also set out your own route – mountain biking is permitted everywhere in the region.

In the middle of the Kokorin you will find Castle Kokorin, a castle from the beginning of the 14th century built in late gothic style.   It stands on a sandstone outcrop in the protected Kokorinsko National Park, not far from the little village of the same name.  A few kilometers further stands the privately owned Castle Houska.  This is open to the public during the summer and in winter frequently used as the location for television recordings.  Just outside the Kokorin, near Ustek, on the top of another sandstone outcrop stands the ruin of a fortress dating from 1375.   The walls were partly restored in the last century.  From the large tower you can get a good impression of the whole fortified complex and an excellent view of the surrounding countryside.

At the other side of the Kokorin, close to ……. on the top of a hill which rises to 604m, stands the fortress Bezdez.  This dates from the end of the 13th century.   This castle, built by the Bohemian King Premsyl Otakar II, is one of the most famous in the region.  Although it is currently being restored, it is still open from May through September from 09.00 – 17.00.

Between Stare Splavy and Doksy, at the foot of the Machovera mountains, lies a large lake (Machova Jezera).  Here there are facilities for all kinds of water sports.  However during the summer months it is indeed very crowded.  For swimming there is also a little lake next to the campsite just outside the village of Duba.

Theresienstadt (Terezin), was built in the 18th century as a military fort and during World War II used by the nazis as the largest concentration camp in the country.  Jews and political prisoners were held here in inhuman conditions and used for forced labour.

Many Jews were transported onwards to other concentration camps such as Auschwitz in Poland, others died in Terezin.

Amongst others Jews from The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark were transported to Terezin.  The large fort, the former “ghetto”, is once again lived in and can be visited.  Next to this stands a smaller fort ( WWII prison camp), which is now a museum (open daily).

There are other museums.  Folk art in Kravare and a natural history museum in Ceska Lipa, with a great number of stuffed animals and a lot of information on local history.

In Novy Bor there are 3 glass galleries.  Every morning there is a demonstration of glass blowing at the Egermann glass factory.  Between Novy Bor and Liberec you will find Castle Lemberg where there is a beautiful exhibition of modern glass.  In the glass school in Zelezny Brod, every year during the summer holiday, there is a wonderful exhibition of work by both teachers and students.
